Food & Sex: Spanish Double Meanings

The Spanish language is full of words that convey double meanings. In Mexico, speaking in double entendre, or “albur” as it’s called in Mexico, has been elevated to an art form. And with that comes many words for food that have been sexualized.

It’s amusing and important to know the double meaning of these words, lest you find yourself the butt of a joke. Even more hilarious to Mexicans is when you innocently remark “Tengo ganas de echarme un taco contigo,” which means literally “I feel like having a taco with you” but can also be interpreted as, “I feel like having a quickie with you.”

Albures are complex and infinite, creative and funny, and require quick wit and an extensive knowledge of Mexican culture and Spanish language to craft and interpret properly.

The following is a basic sampler platter of some double meaning words to watch out for:

  • Papaya (vagina)
  • Echarse un taco (to have sex, a “quickie”)
  • Chile (penis)
  • Hacer tortillas (lesbian  sex)
  • Tortas (buttocks)
  • Melones (breasts)
  • Platano con crema (penis with semen)
  • Huevos (testicles)
  • Leche (semen)

Double meaning in Spanish can vary greatly from country to country. What Spanish food words do you know that have a sexualized double meaning?
